About the International Toy Library Association (ITLA)
The International Toy Library Association (ITLA) was established in 1990 in Torino, Italy, during the 5th International Conference of Toy Libraries. ITLA was created to provide a permanent international network for toy libraries, fostering collaboration and advancing the global promotion of play.
What Are Toy Libraries?
Toy libraries are community resources that provide:
- Access to Play: Offering toys, games, and play materials.
- Dedicated Spaces: Creating environments where play is prioritized.
- Trained Staff: Supporting play through professional guidance.
Toy libraries are inclusive, serving people of all ages and backgrounds regardless of language, nationality, race, gender, ability, or religion.
Our Origins
The decision to form ITLA was made on May 28, 1987, at the 4th International Conference of Toy Libraries in Toronto, Canada. Officially registered under Belgian law, ITLA operates as a non-profit international organization. Its membership includes:
- National toy library associations.
- Individual toy libraries worldwide.
- Organizations and individuals who support ITLA’s mission and aims.
Governance
The ITLA Board of Directors is elected every three years during the General Assembly held at International Toy Library Conferences. Board members must be ITLA members and are chosen to reflect the geographic diversity of the Association’s global membership.
